Rising death toll after early morning plane crash in Kyrgystan

The death toll stands at 37 at this hour after a cargo plane crashed into the village of Zhang-Zhang. At least eight others have been taken to a local hospital, according to a statement from Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Details on the crash are still coming in, but authorities in the country believe thick fog led to the crash.

15 homes were destroyed in the small town when the Boeing 747 smashed into it.

According to Boeing the plane had seating for as many as 10 crewman, but it is not yet clear how many were aboard at the time of the crash.

“Boeing extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who perished in the Turkish Airlines cargo Flight TK6491 accident near Manas Airport Kyrgyzstan, operated by ACT Airlines, as well as its wishes for the recovery of those injured,” Boeing said in an emailed statement. “A Boeing technical team stands ready to provide assistance at the request and under the direction of government investigating authorities.”
