Red Kettle Rumble Challenge: Salvation Army in need of more help

Friday was KRDO Newschannel 13’s second Red Kettle Rumble challenge where we team up with the Salvation Army of El Paso County to help families in need.

This challenge was in honor of our former co worker Paul Richards who unexpectedly passed away Sunday. He started the rumble three years ago.

“It’s something everyone enjoys doing because it gets them in the holiday spirit,” said Steve Balzer, president of Blazer Electric.

It’s the sound of giving that brings Blazer out year after year.

“I’ve been doing it for about 25 years, our company has been doing it for seven. Blaze has been doing it for five,” he said.

With his dog and coworkers by his side, he rings to help the Salvation Army provide for those in need.

Any contribution goes a long way. It takes just $2 to provide one hot meal from someone in need.

“Every $13 provides a night of shelter and this money stays right here in the community,” said Jeane Turner, with the Salvation Army.

It costs $3,000 a day to keep the Salvation Army running. This year they’re behind on donations, making it tough to run programs.

“As of today compared to last year we’re about $10,000 down so we’re not there yet, but we’re confident the community’s going to keep supporting us,” Turner said.

This is the Salvation Army’s only fundraiser of the year. Their goal this year is to raise $300,000 to $350,000 to help local families.

“There’s always a need so it doesn’t go away, you have to keep supporting,” Blazer said.
