How to stay warmest in cold weather

Many of us simply can’t stay warm in below-freezing weather, regardless of how many layers we pile on.

But a local expert said although layers remain the tried-and-true method, what matters are the number and type of layers.

Mountain Chalet in downtown Colorado Springs said a person needs no more than three layers that should be worn in a certain order.

“The first layer should wick away moisture to keep you from sweating,” said Shane Leva, a store employee. “That’s the first layer you apply against your skin. The cotton that’s in most long johns is no good. Cotton kills. What happens to cotton is, as it gets wet, it doesn’t breathe, it stays wet and then it’ll freeze in these type of temperatures. So you’re going to put yourself at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, all sorts of bad things.”

Leva said the second or middle layer should retain body heat, while the third or outer later should be waterproof and protect you from rain, snow and wind.

“There are a lot of new fabrics out there,” he said. “But the three-layer method works best.”

Leva said layers should fit fairly loosely and comfortably.

“Clothes shouldn’t be too tight,” he said. “For the same reasons, hats and gloves also shouldn’t be tight. Your clothes should allow your skin to breathe, prevent sweating and trap heat to insulate your body.”

Leva said boots should be insulated.

“Wear comfortable boots with good socks and you’ll be fine,” he said.
