Accident Alert: A small amount of snow causes big problems on Colorado Springs roadways

UPDATE: With temperatures tonight (Friday into Saturday) plunging into the single digits in many areas, the Pikes Peak region continues to deal with the aftermath of a day-long snow storm that left some accumulation, but plenty of road wrecks.

According to Terry Huggins with the Colorado Springs streets division, a fleet of about 30 sand and plow trucks was able to clean-up much of the east and north sides of town by about 11:00pm.

Huggins says the west side of town was the hardest hit, and crews will be out longer to address that area.

He expects most snow plow operations to calm down after midnight, with crews reassessing about 4:00am to decide where to send morning crews on Saturday.

El Paso county was also on a full call-out Friday, and will do much the same as the city; sending crews home to rest before doing a morning evaluation.

Steep hills were among the most dangerous spots tonight, as roads iced up early.

In all, the deepest accumulations were only about an inch to an inch-and-a-half. Those totals were seen in places like Woodland Park, Black Forest, and Monument.

The Colorado Springs Police Department went on accident alert at around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Numerous crashes have been reported around town, including on I-25.

According to SigAlert, speeds are averaging 20 mph on both directions of I-25 between downtown Colorado Springs and Monument Hill.

Numerous accidents were reported during Friday evening’s commute as the temperature fell and wet roads grew increasingly icy.

Colorado Springs Public Works says it has ordered a “full call-out,” meaning there are between 36 and 40 plows on the roads along with four graters.

The roads in Manitou Springs are also slippery.
