Crews close Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park has closed to through traffic for the winter.

Park officials closed the road, which connects Estes Park on the east and Grand Lake on the west, on Friday. The scenic route is the highest continuous paved road in the United States and reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet.

Park superintendent Darla Sidles says unseasonably warm weather allowed crews to keep the road open longer than expected.

The latest Trail Ridge Road remained open was on Dec. 2, 1933. On average, it closes on Oct. 23.
