Officer Garrett Swasey, dozens others honored for their heroism in law enforcement

Colorado Springs Police Chief honored 65 officers, including Officer Garrett Swasey, Friday afternoon at the 31st annual Medal of Honor Luncheon.

The luncheon highlights the support law enforcement has from the community, while also paying tribute to officers who go above and beyond the call of duty.

“Every time an officer says, ‘I’m just doing my job,’ what I’ve decided over time, is that being a police officer is doing a job for heroes. If they’re just doing their job, then it is truly a job for heroes,” said Kyle Hybal, Colorado Springs Police Foundation Chairman.

Officer Swasey paid the ultimate sacrifice last November when he was gunned down while trying to protect the lives of others.

“A fantastic officer.e. even a better friend, husband, family member. And it’s an absolute tribute to him,” said Commander Pat Rigdon, Colorado Springs Police Dept.

Swasey was a perfect example of what it means to serve and protect.

“His bravery is truly exceptional,” Hybal added.

In addition to the medals, recipients got a special Colorado flag and recognition from Police Chief Pete Carey.
