Parents of student stabbed with pencil speak, hope to stop bullying in schools
Nearly a month after a sixth grader at Carmel Middle School was stabbed with a pencil by a student, the boy’s parents are speaking out.
“We’re letting him take it one day at a time,” said Sherise Nipper, Kyler’s mother.
Kyler Nipper, 11, suffered a punctured lung. Sherise says her son is still recovering and believes the injury was caused from bullying days prior.
“He says I just can’t go to school tomorrow, they’re just making so much fun of me for my shoes and saying my family should just live in a dumpster,” Sherise said.
Kyler’s father says the bullying has been problematic and wants it stop.
“I watched other kids bully other kids. It was all over the school, it wasn’t just one incident with my son,” said Nicholas Nipper.
The family wants to get their message across before it happens to another student at school.
“Yes, I’m angry it happened to my child, but it’s also another child whose life is ruined as well that people aren’t thinking about,” said Sherise.
The family say it’s been tough, but the support has been overwhelming.
“We had to take off so much time from work, we didn’t even get a paycheck last pay period, but everyone has come and helped us,” said Nicholas.
Tommy Graves is one of many volunteers organizing a fundraiser to help the family.
“I wanted to do something, and everyone on Facebook wants to be apart of this. I think it’s because Kyler is such a good kid,” said Graves.
Since the incident, Kyler has collected dozens of shoes to donate to kids being bullied, calling it “Kyler’s Kicks.”
As for the student who hurt Kyler, Sherise said;
“I want to show him love and kindness, I want to know why do you feel you have to be mean? What can we do to help you.”
A fundraiser will be held on Dec. 19th at Seeds Community Cafe in Colorado Springs in support of Kyler.
