Calhan wildlife sanctuary shut down, under new management
A Colorado Springs animal sanctuary that’s been under fire for years is now operating under new management.
Arkansas-based Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is rescuing more than 100 big cats and animals from Serenity Springs Wildlife Center.
Tanya Smith, founder of Turpentine Creek Widlife Refuge moved to Calhan a couple of weeks ago after she was contacted by former owner Nick Sculac to fix up the park. She has been working to get the place in a better condition ever since.
“It’s a lot… it’s a lot to take in,” said Smith.
Sculac has a rocky past, facing complaints and accusations through the years. Last year, the facility received a complaint from the USDA alleging he violated animal welfare. Now, he is facing the challenge of battling cancer.
“Cancer touches home for me because I’ve lost two of my family members, my mother and brother to cancer,” Smith added.
Smith says the care and safety of the animals there is her primary concern. But as for their future, it’s still uncertain.
“I’m not sure right now. I’ve got about 30 days to get the word out there, come up with a business plan, try to get this area under control a little bit and my board will look at it to see if we can re-open this park,”
The park is accepting donations. To contact Smith, call (479) 253-3715.
