Mesa Verde considers fee increase to support new projects

The public comment period for a possible fees increase at Mesa Verde National Park is coming to a close.

The Cortez Journal reports the final day to submit comments on the proposal is Thursday.

If approved, entrance fees to the park would rise from $15 to $20 per vehicle during the summer season. Per-person and motorcycle fees during the high season would increase from $8 to $10, and an annual park pass would rise from $30 to $40.

Park officials say revenue from the higher fees would be used for various projects, including infrastructure improvements and stabilizing the Spruce Tree House. The popular cliff dwelling has been closed since February because of falling rock.

The park is also considering adding a new hiking trail and adding more restrooms.
