Peterson Air Force Base cracking down on broken windshields

If you’re driving with a cracked windshield or a broken window thanks to hail, you’re not alone.

It’s almost a signature look in southern Colorado.

The grace period for getting your windshield fixed is over for some.

The Peterson Air Force Base is cracking down on drivers with broken windows, and starting on Thursday, the base plans to start issuing citations.

Under Colorado Law, a cracked windshield can result in a ticket. But local officials have been relaxed on enforcing that law due to the massive storms that swept through the Pikes Peak Region.

“People ought to be able to get their damages fixed in a timely manner by now,” said Jeff Bohn with Peterson Air Force Base.

Some who are dealing with other damage caused by hail feel police are being unfair.

“I think it’s ridiculous and unfair. People are still waiting for help. Things can’t be fixed that fast,” said Amy Smith, Colorado Springs resident.

“I think they have better things to do than worry about cracked windshields,” said Josh Smith, Colorado Springs resident.

It’s not the same story with Colorado Springs police. Officers are not actively looking for cracks in windshields. But, if they think the damage looks bad enough, they will pull you over.

If you do get a ticket on base, you have 30 days to get your car fixed. Make that deadline and your fine will be absolved.
