Thousands join in fight against breast cancer in COS

Thousands of people gathered at Garden of the Gods Park on Sunday morning to race and save lives.

This was the 22nd Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The event raises funds and awareness for breast cancer, celebrates the survivors and honors lives lost.

Breast cancer fighters, survivors, and family members were joined together in a sea of pink, supporting each other on an emotional day.

“I developed breast cancer, stage 4, a few years ago. I’m cancer free now,” said Jan Clasan.
Clasan is one of the many survivors at the race that knows first-hand how crucial support can be.

“I told my doctor, “just give 10 years to watch my daughter graduate high school. When I hit 10 years, I was like no I want more. Give me more.” And I’m getting more.”

Gary Brown is one of those much needed supporters, dressed up and running for his wife.

“My wife is a breast cancer survivor, and every year we add something different to it. For the past 7 years, the newest upgrade is the tiara to the outfit. Last year, I had a pink cowboy hat,” said Brown.

It may just seem like a costume, but it kept his wife’s spirits up during that terrible time.

And Brown says he’ll do anything to make sure she continues to smile and stay positive.

“I think it brings a sense of unity and family, if you will, because they’re going through the same thing together at the same time.”

Hundreds of people were racing to find a cure on Sunday.

“You feel the support of so many people, and it gives us hope that we’ll beat this thing,” said Karla Balk, breast cancer survivor.
