Texas teacher does away with assigned homework

An elementary school teacher in Texas has decided to go against everything we have ever known when it comes to after-school assignments.

Brandy Young is a teacher at Godley Elementary School, and during Meet the Teacher Night, she changed all the rules. She handed out a letter stating that “there will be no formally assigned homework” from her classroom.

In her letter, Young says, “Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance. Rather, I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success.”

For the most part, this new of way of education has received positive feedback from parents and students alike.

Samantha Gallagher, whose daughter is in Young’s class, posted a picture of the letter on Facebook, and it has since been shared over 70,000 times.

In Young’s letter she puts an emphasis on family time being the true success and ends it all with, “eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside and get your child to bed early.”

Now, the big question is will other schools follow suit?
