Colorado to vote on restoring presidential primaries

Colorado voters will get to decide this fall whether to scrap presidential caucuses and replace them with primary elections.

They’ll also get to decide whether unaffiliated voters should be allowed to vote in primaries .

The secretary of state’s office announced Wednesday that the two ballot measures had enough petition signatures to appear on statewide ballots.

The primary push came after Democrats and Republicans alike grumbled about last March’s presidential caucuses. Democrats had long lines and confusion; Republicans were miffed that they not to make a more direct choice for president.

And unaffiliated voters are now Colorado’s largest voting demographic, outnumbering either Democrats or Republicans.

The ballot measures join a crowded ballot including questions on medically assisted suicide; universal health care; a higher minimum wage; and a higher tobacco tax.
