Suspect steals car, drives through closed Cimarron project

Tuesday morning at 1:52 a.m., officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department say a driver, later known to be Abraham Paquet, was trying to get through a closed area of the Cimarron and I-25 project.

Police say that a Colorado State Patrol trooper working at the construction site tried to pull Paquet over, but Paquet immediately sped off the southbound I-25 ramp. The trooper could not catch him, but noted he was in a 2014 Mercedes Benz that had been reported as stolen to the El Paso County Sheriffs Office.

Nearly a half-hour later, the same vehicle exited northbound I-25 at Cimarron street and stopped in front of an officer according to police.

The officer was able to arrest Paquet and return the stolen car to its owners.

Paquet is suspected of stealing the car and is facing charges of motor vehicle theft, felony eluding and several other traffic charges.
