Pueblo group looking to expand benefits for Latinos

A group gathered in Pueblo on Tuesday to help raise awareness about what they call a growing problem.

The Social Security and Latinos Summit focused on bringing awareness to the issue of social security.

The group wants to find solutions that expand benefits for Latinos.

They cited national statistics that say long-term benefits to recipients could be cut 25 percent in the next 20 years.

“Social security is so critical to so many people. Nine out of 10 Coloradoans, age 65 and over, receive social security. And the average monthly check is only about $1,235 a month, so imagine what it would be like if it was cut by 25 percent.

The summit was one of five held nationwide, hosted by the AARP.
