Despite trailing in key swing state, Trump team sees opportunity in Colorado

Donald Trump’s Colorado political director Patrick Davis knows the state’s nine electoral votes are key to victory in November.

“Colorado is on every map,” Davis said. “This is a must-win for Donald Trump, it’s a must-win for Hillary Clinton. The path to the White House goes right through Colorado.”

But, the latest poll released on Friday by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal suggests the path is narrowing for Trump, trailing Clinton by 14 points in the Rockies.

Robby Mook, Clinton’s national campaign manager said his team is on a mission.

“We want to win states big and send a message,” Mook said. “You can’t run as a major party nominee and make the kind of disrespectful, bigoted, racist remarks from Donald Trump. You can’t nominate someone who’s so temperamentally unfit to lead our Armed Forces.”

“The Hillary Clinton campaign doesn’t get to make that decision,” Davis said.
“She’s running on a message of another eight years, another four years of Barack Obama.”

Davis contends the Trump ground game, while not as robust as Clinton’s, is blossoming.

“We have over 100 volunteers on the ground, we have 15 staffers across the state,” he said. “We will eventually open 10 offices in Colorado. We have people knocking on doors and making phone calls every day and we have for over a year.”

Clinton now has 17 offices here, but the Trump team is not betting on tradition.

His coalition is filled with people who left the Republican or Democratic party and became unaffiliated voters,” Davis said.

The Trump team has yet to air TV ads in this battleground state.

Davis projects the ads will likely start after Labor Day.
