New details released in triple pool drowning in Pueblo

The Pueblo Police Department released on Monday the details leading up to the drowning of two children and a teen in Pueblo last week.

With the help of witnesses, Pueblo police determined that Azucena Gandarilla, 3, Amaya Gandarilla, 6, and Joo Lee, 17, drowned after jumping into the deep end of the pool at Pueblo Grande Village on August 8. The depth of the water was 8-feet-deep.

Other children were in the pool and an adult was nearby when one of the victim’s bodies floated to the top. Pueblo Grande Village staff was able to get the three out of the water and call police. The two sisters were transported to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Police do not believe any criminal wrongdoing contributed to the triple drowning, but this is still an ongoing investigation pending the coroner’s final autopsy report.
