Local Louisianans focus on friends, family hit by flood waters

Colorado Springs residents with ties to Louisiana said Monday they are focused on their friends and family who havebattled flood waters devastating parts of the state.

Thousands of people have been rescued from their homes and cars, while others try to salvage what little hasn’t been impacted by the heavy rain.

Ryan Dearman moved from Lafayette, Louisiana, two weeks ago. Lafayette and Baton Rouge are among the hardest-hit places.

“It’s tough being here and not being able to help, because typically after hurricanes, people come together and works to help people that need it most,” said Dearman.

Dearman’s parents’ home has several inches of water in it. The home is situated on higher ground so it’s not as flooded as other homes on the street. Dearman said his friends sent him pictures and videos. In the videos, you see furniture floating inside the home and people walking around in waders.

“We haven’t seen flooding like this. It’s really unprecedented. It makes me feel like I should be there to help my friends and family,” said Dearman.

Carol Guillory lives in Colorado Springs but she owns a home in Lafayette. Guillory is grateful her home is OK, but her street is flooded.

“We dodged a bullet, though our neighbors across the street weren’t quite as lucky. My sister isn’t lucky. She has over 2 feet of water in her house,” said Guillory.

Both Guillory and Dearman spoke about the community’s hard work and cooperation during disasters.

“It’s kind of the Cajun way of things. We step in and help each other when we need to,” said Guillory.

“It’s always amazing to see the community come together,” said Dearman.

The Southeastern Colorado Red Cross said it’s sending volunteers to Louisiana. The group will be leaving on Wednesday and is preparing to stay for 14 to 21 days.
