Star Wars actor Kenny Baker, who played R2-D2, has died

British actor Kenny Baker, who played the famous beeping droid R2-D2 has passed away, according to The Guardian.

Baker appeared in six Star Wars films, and also acted in several other films in the 1980’s including Time Bandits, Flash Gordon and The Elephant Man.

According to the BBC, Baker said despite the fame R2-D2 brought him, his own favorite screen role was as Fidgit in 1981’s Time Bandits.

Family members say he died after a long illness.

According to his website, he was 81.

Baker’s niece, Abigail Shield, told the Guardian: “It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.”
