Injured mountain lion put down after getting stuck in window well

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says a mountain lion that got stuck in a Security-Widefield window well had to be put down.

The cat was first spotted in a neighborhood near S. Powers Boulevard and Grinnell Street at around 6:30 a.m. by a man who told Parks and Wildlife that the cat had its paws up on his sliding glass door.

By the time CPW officers arrived, another call had come in. This time a woman reported that the mountain lion was in her window well.

CPW officers said the mountain lion was not putting weight on his back legs and appeared to be injured. The cat was tranquilized, removed from the window well and examined.

Parks and Wildlife says the cat had suffered a back injury and it was determined that the humane thing to do was to put him down.

While it may sound unusual for a mountain lion to be spotted so far east, Parks and Wildlife says that’s not the case. It says the cat was only about a year old and was likely in the area trying to scout out his own territory. It says that if there are deer around, there are mountain lions around too, and that deer are known to live in that area.
