Cracked Streets Frustrates Neighbors, City Officials

springs neighborhood are frustrated with a serious street cracking problem. they’ve coped with it for years. the city is equally stumped by it. krdo newschannel 13’s scott harrison is live in the soaring eagles neighborhood, not far from the airport. scott, nothing the city has done to resolve the problem has worked so far. the city has tried to pave the cracks, but all that’s done is create streets full of speed bumps. you can see how many there are. the asphalt keeps moving, and no one’s sure why. the cracks in the soaring eagles neighborhood are wide enough for vegetation to grow in them. but it doesn’t make the driving any smoother. “i’ve been here since 2013, and it seems like the cracks in the road are getting worse. they’re getting bigger, especially depending on what kind of car you have. you’re going to feel it more if you have more low-profile tires.” the city says this kind of cracking is a problem all over the east side… in subdivisions built in the 1990s… before the city raised its development standards. “this is something that we haven’t figured out how to fix yet. we haven’t figured out what the cause is.” paving doesn’t work… the streets just crack again… wasting money and time. so the city recently installed a test strip, on a block of tail spin drive. “what the city did with this test strip, was to apply a layer of fiberglass material under the asphalt before paving it. they’re hoping it provides the strength needed to resist cracking. but it’ll take a year to know if this works because it requires a full year of freezing and thawing weather.” the city asks neighbors to be patient while it tries to determine what’s making these street crack, and how to fix them. the city says any solution is going to be expensive, so it wants to be certain about what works before spending a lot of money on it. in colorado springs–scott harrison, krdo newschannel 13. thank scott.. and to report a pothole or road issue in your neighborhood.. head over to krdo dot com.. we have a pot hole patrol link under the top news section.. i’ll show you
