‘Acting’ dropped from Collas’ title at CSFD

The Colorado Springs Fire Department has a new Chief.

Mayor John Suthers has appointed previously acting Fire Chief Ted Collas to the department’s top post on a permanent basis.

Collas has served in the Colorado Springs Fire Department since 1985 and was appointed Acting Chief in March.

“Ted’s 31 years with the Colorado Springs Fire Department, combined with his extensive leadership, training and operational experience will serve as a vital asset to our community,” said Mayor Suthers. “I am pleased with the hiring process and the level of nationwide interest in the position. However, after interviewing the other candidates it was clear that Chief Collas was the best choice to move our fire department forward.”

The city says 45 people applied for the job. After a telephone interview process, seven candidates were selected for formal interviews. That group was then whittled down to three finalists.

Collas holds an associate degree in Fire Science, a bachelor’s degree in Management, and a master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership.

In his new role as Chief, Collas will oversee a department of 482 sworn and civilian positions and 22 fire stations.

His annual salary will be $160,235.
