Man arrested after hours-long standoff with police in Caon City

One man is under arrest after fighting with his neighbors and barricading himself inside his home for nearly six hours.

Canon City police say it all started around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when 41-year-old Stephen Garrett verbally confronted his neighbor. He then ran away and locked himself in his house on the 1100 block of College Avenue when officers got on scene. They say he instructed his pit bulls to “go get them,” and released them on the officers.

Neighbors were immediately evacuated from the area to ensure their safety. The police department activated its Crisis Negotiation unit and called the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T Team after Garrett stopped responding. They entered his house and found him unresponsive just before 3 a.m. and transported him for a medical evaluation.

Garrett is facing charges of menacing, intimidation of a witness and failure to obey a lawful order.
