Updating local road construction projects
KRDO NewsChannel 13 updated the status of several key road projects in the Colorado Springs area Wednesday.
A $6.4 million project that started Wednesday night and continues overnights into early next year affects 1.5 miles of Interstate 25 between the South Nevada and Circle Drive/Lake Avenue exits.
The project includes paving, replacing a bridge joint and repairing a bridge deck. Drivers can expect lane closures and detours and occasional closures of the U.S. 24 ramp to and from the MLK Bypass.
The ramp closures will happen overnight, during the day and on weekends as necessary. Work hours generally are between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Some of the projects are finished or near completion. The interchange project at Interstate 25 and Fillmore Street is finished, and a new bridge on West Rockrimmon Boulevard reopened to traffic at 9 p.m. Wednesday after being closed for nearly two weeks.
Work will continue until next fall on the interchange project at Interstate 25 and Cimarron Street. During the next few months, drivers can expect temporary lane closures and restrictions, and lower speed limits.
Other ongoing projects include the $6.3 million widening of Powers Boulevard, between Fountain Boulevard and Platte Avenue, and repairs to the Rainbow Falls bridge on the eastbound U.S. 24 ramp into Manitou Springs.
The Colorado Department of Transportation is overseeing both projects.
Some drivers are frustrated with the construction activity.
“It seems like there’s an extraordinary amount of delays for the work that’s being done,” said John Partin. “It just seems like they’re arbitrarily doing construction without any regard to the traffic flow.”
Drivers like Phyllis Williams disagree.
“I know (projects are) going on all over town,” she said. “And I’m happy. I’m glad for it. Even if it means a little bit of inconvenience to slow down and alter your route, I still think it’s worthwhile.”
