Medal of Honor recipient to speak in Pueblo
A Medal of Honor recipient will be in Pueblo Tuesday.
Vietnam Veteran Sammy Davis will speak at 4 p.m at the Center For American Values.
The center will also unveil Davis’ Portrait of Valor at the event.
Admission is free to the public.
In 1967, Davis and his unit were under attack by the Vietcong. Davis manned a machine gun to give his fellow soldiers cover. He was hurt, but refused to take cover, instead taking over the unit’s burning howitzer and firing several shots.
He then swam on the back of an air mattress, despite having a broken back, to help rescue three wounded American soldiers.
Davis was giving the Medal of Honor the following year from President Lyndon B Johnson.
Davis is known as the “real Forrest Gump” because actor Tom Hank’s face was superimposed over his picture for the Emmy Award winning film.
