New details emerge in Trump elevator rescue.

We now know why GOP Presidential Nominee Donald Trump was late arriving to his rally at UCCS on Friday; Trump, along with nine of his staffers, were stuck in a downtown elevator just prior to the event.

We are also learning what likely prompted that rescue, thanks to an inspection of the elevator after the incident.

According to the co-owner of the Mining Exchange Hotel, Perry Sanders, Trump’s campaign staff arrived at the hotel in possession of their own elevator key, and was using it to operate the elevator manually.

This is fairly standard for VIPs who are traveling under heightened security, and allows staffers to control access to the elevator during the VIP visit.

Sanders confirms that the elevator car became stuck between floors.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department was called in, and rescuers were able to lower a ladder down to the trapped parties through a hatch in the elevator ceiling.

Everyone inside, including Trump, used the ladder to climb on top of the elevator and through the second floor elevator doors.

Saturday morning, a technician with Schindler elevators inspected the car to uncover any malfunctions.

The only problem that could be found was a computer code indicating “elevator failure due to operator error”.

The technician believes that a Trump staffer incorrectly turned the key at the wrong moment, stopping the car between the first and second floors. A safety switch shuts down the elevator automatically when this occurs.

Weight was not likely a factor, as the car is rated for 3,500 lbs.

The elevator was found not to have any other issues, and is back in full service.

Perry Sanders reports that a Trump campaign organizer from New York spoke to him on Saturday for a follow-up, and was very gracious in thanking the entire Mining Exchange staff for their professional conduct during the rescue.
