Firefighters compete in strength tests

Firefighters from Southern Colorado were pulling, lifting and pushing to test their strength at the Southern Colorado Firefighter Olympiad.

“We want to show our community that we are physically fit, that we are capable to do our job,” said Tim Trujillo, the Olympiad organizer.

The skills tested are ones firefighters use every day.

“This is what we’re going to be doing on the job, a lot of this just ties into our daily lifestyle on the job,” said Brett Steele, a Pueblo City firefighter.

The competition isn’t only about showing off their skills, but promoting a healthy lifestyle and a sense of community.

“For those guys out there to step up, out east in La Junta, Rocky Ford and Cheraw to come down here early this morning, it means so much to me and it means so much to their communities,” Trujillo said.

Community teams were also invited to participate and show their support for the firefighters.

“It’s just a great way to show the community what it takes our firefighters to do what they do,” said Erika Trujillo, a participant.

The winners earned bragging rights but also got a chance to get to know their colleagues.

“Even though we’re all split up in different fire departments, we all essentially do the same job so it’s nice to be able to get to know one another,” Steele said.
