Driver accused of hitting, killing 8-year-old girl in Longmont turns himself in

The driver accused of striking and killing an 8-year-old girl in Longmont while she rode her bike has turned himself in.

20 year-old Kyle Couch was arrested after bringing himself to the Boulder County Jail on Friday. He was released after posting bond according to Longmont Deputy Chief Jeffrey M. Satur.

Our partners at Denver7 said investigators working on the case believe Couch was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash, adding they planned to arrest him by the end of this week.

Couch did remain at the scene and cooperated with officials after the crash occurred, investigators said.

Peyton Knowlton, 8, was hit on May 20 by a full-size Ford pickup in the area of Alpine Street and East 17th Avenue. She was riding her bike with her stepfather, said police. She was returning from an end-of-the-school year celebration with her fellow second graders.

Officers and fire personnel performed CPR on the girl, but were unable to save her. She later died at Longmont United Hospital.

Family and friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help the bereaved parents.
