Man charged in deaths of girlfriend, her mother in Denver

A man accused of killing his girlfriend and her mother in a northeast Denver home has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say 27-year-old parolee Angel Chavez attacked 26-year-old Maira Cordero-Cuesta and 45-year-old Raquel Cordero-Cuesta early Friday. He’s also charged with violating a protection order.

Police think Chavez was attacking the younger woman when her mother heard the commotion, came to help and was killed as well. Both women died of “sharp force injuries.”

The Denver Post reports (http://goo.gl/JR6vG9 ) Chavez and Maira Cordero-Cuesta have two children together and a well-documented history of domestic trouble. On the day of the killings, investigators believe she was heading to meet another man and to break up with Chavez.

Booking documents do not indicate if Chavez has hired an attorney.
