Rescuers scramble to save horse stuck in mud at Cherry Creek State Park

Rescuers rushed to a state park near Denver to save a 13-year-old horse that got stuck in the mud Thursday.

Firefighters from the South Metro Fire Rescue District had to hike in to a wet, muddy area of Cherry Creek State Park to save “Cupcake.”

Note: It was originally reported that Cupcake’s name is Buttercup, but that turned out to be incorrect.

Cupcake was stuck in the mud 400 yards away from the pavement in water that was knee deep.

The fire department said that Buttercup had become exhausted by the ordeal. Her veterinarian was called in to give her an injection to give her the energy she needed to stand up and walk.

Buttercup was successfully rescued at around 6 p.m.
