Neighbors express safety concerns about Pueblo intersection

Dario Madrid hopes his persistence will get a stoplight installed at the intersection of Troy and Oakshire. He’s been at it for three years.

“There’s been a lot of accidents, they’re serious ones too,” Madrid said.

He and his neighbors are tired of waiting for the city to act, so they stood in protest.

“Anytime something is needed on the east side, we’re always put on the back burner. This has been going on for years and years and years,” Madrid said.

But City Manager Sam Azad says the city is taking action. Plans are in works to make safety improvements by October.

“We have to go through our process of grant, finding match and go through the council, accept the grant, approve the grant, budget and appropriate it. So it takes a little while,” Azad said.

Neighbors say one of their biggest concerns is the speed that the cars go through this area. They say accidents happen here all of the time, but they’re concerned it could become more serious.

“We don’t want no fatalities, we don’t want nobody hurt seriously,” Madrid said.

Azad says safety is the number one priority, but change takes time.

“You know, you’re working with the government, the wheels turn pretty slow and there’s a reason for it. The reason is that you want to make sure that the tax payer’s funds are appropriated and spent accordingly,” Azad said.

Madrid says he’ll believe it when he sees it.

“I won’t be satisfied until I see the lights go up,” Madrid said.
