Miracle Treat Day benefits new Children’s Hospital in southern Colorado
Dairy Queen is hosting their annual Miracle Treat Day benefiting Children’s Hospital Colorado. Participating locations will donate $1 or more from every Blizzard treat sold to building a new hospital in southern Colorado.
Jackson Ziwak, 11, is one of many patients who call Children’s Hospital their second home. He’s been visiting since he sustained a severe head injury at age two.
“He was treated at Children’s Hospital for 3 months and also had a hemisphere rectomy which disconnected the left brain from the right brain,” said Tina Ziwak, mother.
Normally Jackson would travel to Denver for care but soon he can stay close to home. Plans for a new hospital are in the works.
“It’s a huge step for our community. When Jackson’s accident originally happened we lived at Children’s for 3 months in Denver,” said Ziwak.
A portion of the proceeds from Miracle Treat Day will benefit the expansion of Children’s Hospital Colorado’s network of pediatric services into Southern Colorado with the building of the region’s only comprehensive children’s hospital, set to open in 2018.
The new facility will break ground this fall on the Memorial North campus in Colorado Springs. The hospital will offer new pediatric care not available in southern Colorado.
“To meet the community needs for care, to keep kids here closer to home is going to be huge. We’ll provide for the first time a pediatric only emergency department, pediatric operating rooms and more,” said Greg Raymond, VP of Children’s Hospital Colorado.
All are services crucial to patients like Jackson getting the care they need.
“When Jackson comes here he doesn’t look at it as a bad thing, he knows he has to work when he comes here. They’re like family to us there. Kind of our angels here on earth, and they take great care of him,” said Ziwak.
Last year, DQ locations across the Rocky Mountain region raised $145,000 on Miracle Treat Day for Children’s Colorado, which was up nearly $40,000 from 2014.
