Police say man assaulted Colorado Springs officer

A Colorado Springs police officer is recovering after being assaulted Monday.

According to police, officers were investigating a disturbance at Henry Elementary School around 8:30 p.m.

Officer J. Thurman was interviewing people involved in the disturbance; when police say Gregory Herring tried to throw Thurman to the ground.

The arrest report says a struggle ensued and punches were thrown before Thurman used pepper spray to try and subdue Herring.

Herring fled from the scene but was quickly tracked down by a K-9 unit; Herring was arrested when another officer shocked him with a Taser.

Herring has been charged with second-degree assault on a peace officer.
