Petition for free bottled water in Security

A woman in Security is creating a petition, demanding free bottled water.

Callie Loudenber says her community deserves it after man-made chemicals were detected in groundwater wells. All 25 wells in Security are now out of compliance, due to the levels of PFC’s found in the water. The EPA’s health advisory says pregnant women and infants may want to avoid drinking their tap water. But as we found out, most adults aren’t taking any chances.

Kathy White for example, isn’t drinking her tap water. White says she’s relieved that the Colorado Department of Health is investigating the water in Security, but she wonders what to do in the meantime.

“The next two weeks we’re going to be over 90 degrees,” White said.

White lives in Zone 1 which is the most heavily affected area in Security. White buys bottled water or fills up water jugs at her mother’s house in Colorado Springs.

“The goal that needs to be taken care of right away is clean safe water. They shouldn’t have to pay for their water bill and bottles of water. Security is arguable one of the more low income areas. A lot of comments on my petition say they can’t afford it,” said Loudenber.

The petition has more than 600 signatures after three days.

“The governor and senators all get notified every time we meet one of our goals. We will not accept doing nothing, I won’t give up until we get an answer.”

For now, many water taps in Security are staying off.

The chemicals causing the problem in the water come from a variety of products including firefighting foam. Many in Security believe the chemicals came from firefighting training at Peterson Air Force Base. The Colorado Department of Health says Peterson is conducting its own assessment looking into chemical levels.
