Blind 4H competitor shoots archery

Cole Youngren has been competing in archery for four years, but does it with the help of his coach because he is blind.

“My dad had a lot to do with it. He said he thinks I could do it and so I tried it,” Youngren said.

Youngren has a special stand that helps him shoot and with some help from his coach can focus on a target that he can’t see.

“I just put that drumstick right here and so then I know I’m fairly close to (being) lined up, and my instructor just tells me left or right, up and down,” Youngren said.

For a lot of kids in 4H, it’s not only about the competition, but about the community as well.

“Getting to work with them is probably the most rewarding part to me, seeing them improve, seeing them grow,” said Nick Hohnston, a 4H archery competitor.

For many, the fair is a last opportunity to compete in archery.

“I’ve never made it to state and I’m nervous, like OK am I going to jack up again and I’m excited if I’m actually going to make it” said Kaitlyn Jesik, another 4H archery competitor.

But for everyone, it’s about having fun and trying new things even if it’s just a shot in the dark.

“Just getting out and having fun and doing the best you can is my favorite part,” Youngren said.
