Rare fish rescued from Hayden Pass Fire danger zone

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says volunteers mobilized to make sure a rare fish survives the aftermath of the Hayden Pass Fire.

The volunteers with CPW and the U.S. Forest Service went beyond the fire safe zone to remove the green cutthroat trout from the lower prong of Hayden Creek. The fish were moved to an isolation chamber at a fish hatchery.

According to CPW, this green cutthroat shares a unique genetic anomaly with a cutthroat trout found in the Smithsonian Museum said to have been taken from Twin Lakes near Leadville in 1889.

CPW aquatic biologists were worried ash and sediment from the aftermath of the fire would wash down into the lower prong, cutting off food supply and oxygen for the fish.
