Political expert, voters react to Melania Trump’s RNC speech after allegations of plagiarism surface

Much of the talk Tuesday at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland focused on a portion of Melania Trump’s convention speech Monday night and its striking resemblance to Michelle Obama’s words eight years ago at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Political scientist Steve Meyer calls this a mistake by the Trump campaign, one that might stick with some voters on the fence.

“For voters who haven’t made up their minds yet, it’s one more layer of this impression that the White House if Trump were to be president, might be just as disorganized as his campaign,” Meyer said.

Meyer believes this headline won’t have a lasting impact through the fall.

“I don’t think people are going to march into the polls on November 8 and say remember when Melania plagiarized Michelle and that’s why I’m voting for Hillary Clinton today,” Meyer said.

“Turnitin,” a plagiarism website that checks about 200,000 papers daily said there is less than a one in a trillion chance Melania accidentally used Michelle’s words.
