CDOT ready for flash flooding season

Colorado Department of Transportation is prepared for this flash flooding season. However, so far, there has not been a need to close Highway 24 due to flooding.

Eleven closure gates were installed along 24 in Spring of 2015. It cost one million dollars to complete the project. Closure gates are located between Manitou Springs and Cascade.

At the time of this publication, the gates have only been closed a few times: one time for a hail event and two other times for crime-related reasons in the area.

Cameras associated with the gates prove helpful, too.

“We’ve been able to look up here during rain events, necessary flooding events. We can kind of see what the weather is doing,” said CDOT highway maintenance supervisor.

Come winter, the gates could be implemented for high-impact snow events.
