Missing family found in La Plata County

A family who went missing while vacationing in the Weminuche Wilderness Area northeast of Durango has been found.

Dustin Beaver, 33, along with his 6-year-old son and 8-year-old twin son and daughter, left for a hiking trip on Saturday. Beaver says faulty directions from a hiker from Texas caused them to go in the wrong direction.

The La Plata County sheriff’s office says that after two days of wandering, the family found an Australian and asked them for help. The family helped Beaver and his family hike down the mountain and brought them to the Pine River Trail on Monday night. Both families met members of the La Plata County Search & Rescue Team.

Beaver and his three children are in good condition. Rescue crews say they had enough food and water for the trip.

At least 30 people from various agencies helped in the search.
