Good Samaratians help hit-and-run survivor

The survivor of a severe hit-and-run accident in Colorado Springs is sharing her unnerving story with KRDO NewsChannel 13.
Sophie Shafter says a semitruck slammed into the back of her car during rush hour Monday afternoon, sending her into a tailspin across three lanes of traffic.
The accident happened on southbound I-25 between Rockrimmon and Garden of the Gods.
Shafter doesn’t know who hit her, but she’ll never forget the good Samaritans who helped her.
“I’m grateful to be alive. I must have spun around three or four times before I hit that guardrail and I’m dumbfounded that I was able to walk away from this,” said Shafter.
The crash left Shafter stranded in the middle of the Interstate facing the wrong way and blocking lanes.
“It was a very vulnerable place to be with all the traffic going around me,” Shafter said.
KRDO NewsChannel 13 caught the aftermath of the crash on our traffic cameras.
“They opened their door and got me out of that busy highway,” Shafter said.
Shafter says a van stopped and helped her to safety.
KRDO was able to track down the people who helped Shafter when she needed it the most, and it turns out helping people is what they do best.
“The timing was impeccable. We were supposed to be there. We were there when we needed to be,” said Killin Hough, of Operation Homefront.
As it turns out, the good Samaritans happened to be a team with Operation Homefront, including a former Army medic.
“We didn’t want someone to hit the car or hit her. People were still driving, they weren’t stopping, it was crazy,” said Kari McClellan, of Operation Homefront.
“They gave me a safe space during that moment of chaos,” Shafter said.
The chaos was created by someone who’s still out there on the road.
If anyone saw the semitruck driver they’re asked to call Colorado Springs police at 444-7000.
The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday.
