Local law enforcement weigh in on police shootings

is still reeling from the shooting deaths of three officers in an apparent ambush yesterday. montrell jackson and matthew gerald and sheriff’s deputy brad garafola were killed. two shootings in two weeks raise more concerns about law enforcement safety tonight. krdo newschannel 13’s greg miller is live at the el paso county sheriff’s office. greg, the recent violence is impacting deputies there. admittedly, they’re nervous, but think about it. deputies and officers have to go to a crime scene or a call of a threatening person with a gun…. regardless of their own fears. it’s a thin blue line between protecting the public’s safety and their own. they serve and protect … but more of them have become the target. it’s just sad that it’s come to this. thousands of miles away in el paso county, undersheriff joe breister admits… he thinks about this often. you’ll see the occasional person drive by, with their cell phones out recording it, even if they have no inclination on what the circumstances are. while denver pd says patrol officers will work in pairs… undersheriff breister says, it can’t happen here. the amount of calls for service we get, if we have 10 people working a shift, we’d be down to five. there’s people who would call in a priority for an immediate response… that wouldn’t get anyone for 20 minutes. breister knows he’s at higher risk. a feeling shared by one of the shooting victims days ago. montrell jackson posted on his facebook page – “these are trying times. please don’t let hate infect your heart. this city must and will get better,” nats – in baton rouge, hostilities were high from the shooting death of alton sterling. but dallas proved it could happen anywhere. i know the makeup and integrity of people who wear the badge in this community and they are the finest in this country. admitting a dialogue with the public is necessary… for a force at a higher risk. we talked with other law enforcement agencies in southern colorado, including c-s-p-d and the teller county sheriff’s office. they all said they weren’t changing patrol policies… but are urging their personnel to be extra cautious of their surroundings. live in colorado springs,
