Arrest in sexual assault investigation in Colorado Springs

Police say a woman is recovering after an apparent sexual assault incident.

It happened in the 300 block of Cheyenne Boulevard. Authorities say the woman reported an unknown man, who crawled through her window and then physically and sexually assaulted her. She suffered serious injuries.

Gary Vernon Powell, 45, was arrested at his home and faces charges of sexual assault, first degree assault and first degree burglary.

Powell is a registered sex offender, with prior convictions for burglary and sexual assault.

Detectives say the woman and the man did not know each other.
