Ski towns collect record taxes thanks to winter tourism

Colorado ski towns had yet another record-setting winter, with sales tax revenues reaching highest-ever levels for most ski communities in the state.

The Denver Post reports that at least six Colorado ski towns saw record tax harvests for every month of the ski season, from December through March.

The past three ski seasons have hit records for ski communities in Colorado with all0time high revenue-based annual rent payments to the Forest Service and a new record for visitors when 13 million people came in the 2015-16 season.

The Great Recession hurt visitor spending and most ski towns saw sharp drops in tax revenues in 2008-09. However most ski towns started seeing pre-recession spending around 2012-13. At the time, some towns even bear previous highs set in 2007-08.
