Monument water issues continue

Hundreds of people gathered Saturday morning to learn what is going on with the more than 50 millions gallons of water that is disappearing in Monument.

“The fact that it’s not on the surface and the fact that we can’t find it means it’s going to be a hard problem to solve,” said Mark Melville, the vice president of the Triview Metropolitan District board.

In early June, the Triview Metro District noticed the large water usage increase and have yet to figure out where it’s going.

“We have a leak detection company. This morning we got them here and they’re out checking those hard to-find places,” Melville said.

The community meeting was held Saturday morning but many people think the important issues were not addressed.

“Just wondering why we’re getting all the restrictions, where the water problem is coming from, what the cause was and those questions just haven’t been answered,” said Jeff Lampman, a concerned resident.

Many neighbors in the area say communication is one of the biggest issues and beside warning signs in the neighborhood, they haven’t heard many updates.

“All we’re getting is a bunch of negative communication, imposing more restriction on us and also a bunch of fines,” Lampman said.

Joseph Whitman, who grew up in Flint, Michigan says he notices a lot of similarities between the water issues there and here.

“You can only put so many infrastructures in one area that are drawn from those limited resources, then you’re going to have a problem,” Whitman said.

All of the neighbors in the area and the board members just want to solve the issue and get back to normal.

“We understand the frustration. It’s frustrating for us. It’s horribly frustrating to not be able to find this thing. What we would ask is that you do your best to conserve water,” Melville said.
