TRAFFIC ALERT: Cimarron Street closures scheduled this week

Full overnight closures of Cimarron Street are scheduled this week. CDOT is closing Cimarron underneath Interstate 25 for bridge work.

Closures will be from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

A larger portion of the area will be closed overnight Thursday and Saturday. That includes onramps and off ramps in the southbound lanes of I-25.

There will also be overnight lane restrictions beginning Tuesday night on southbound I-25 over Cimarron. Detours will be in place for all closures.

Drivers have dealt with construction at I-25 and Cimarron since May 2015.

“I avoid it all the time. I get off I-25 at Bijou and come through the city streets to avoid it because they have such narrow lanes and it’s so windy and hard to maneuver,” said Barbara Wright.

There is some relief in sight. Project engineer Dave Watt told KRDO news that crews are on schedule with a completion date of fall 2017.

“The end result is probably going to be good. I think it’ll be better than what we had,” said Wright.

This week, CDOT is adding 30 girders to the road for safety. While it’s been a temporary headache for some drivers, the end result will better traffic flow for a busy intersection.

“I think when it’s done it’s going to be awesome, and it’s been years in the making,” said Layne Brubach.

The $113 million project will also help reduce rush-hour capacity by 40 percent on the weekends.
