Calhan boy dies after being hit by SUV during camping trip

An 11-year-old boy from Calhan has died after being hit by an SUV during a camping trip with his mother and step-father near Bonanza in Saguache County.

Investigators say Liam Lasher ran out in front of a 2004 Toyota 4Runner on County Road LL56. They say the driver, Reed Wipperfurth, 19, of Steamboat Springs swerved to try to miss Lasher but ended up hitting him.

State Patrol says Lasher didn’t see the vehicle coming before running out onto the road. It says Wipperfurth and his passenger stopped and immediately rendered aid.

Lasher was airlifted to Heart of the Rockies Hospital in Salida where he was pronounced dead.

Speed, drugs and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the crash.
