Vigil for Jack Jacquez as jury deliberates

jurors will resume deliberations tomorrow morning… in the murder case against a former rocky ford police officer. closing arguments finsihed today in the trial of james ashby. he’s accused of shooting and killing jack jacquez back in 2014. new at ten, krdo newschannel 13’s greg miller was at a vigil this evening… where they remembered him… as they wait for justice. they light candles… make signs… and pray for justice for jack. sot: jack was my son’s best friend. he’d been to my home many times. i really liked jack a lot. he was a good soul, a good person. he surely didn’t deserve what happened to him. as his family waits… sot: my cousin did not need to get killed. at this vigil, they remember the good times with jacuez. ulloa: very polite, he’s just a good boy who was thankful for everything they had. turning to each other for comfort. ulloa: he never wished bad on anybody. standup: those prayers come as closing arguments were made… and now the case is in the hands of a jury. ashby’s defense says the former police officer thought jacquez was a burglar and shot him out of self defense. ashby’s attorneys also say the physical evidence, like the cbi bullet trajectory test and the placement of the shell casings are in their client’s favor. but the d-a calls it murder – saying jacquez angered ashby by riding his skateboard on highway 50. the d-a- says it doesn’t make sense why jacquez would break into his own home. cousin sot: why’d you have to pull a gun on someone in his own home. he was doing nothing wrong, he just wanted to go home to go to sleep. why’d you shoot him anyway? as the jury continues its deliberations… sot: i’m praying for peace for the family and friends. these people hope for justice… though it likely won’t bring closure. in rocky ford, greg miller, krdo newschannel 13. neither jacquez’ immediately family nor ashby’s attorney wanted to go on camera tonight. stay tuned to krdo on-air and online … for any updates on the jury’s decision tomorrow.
