Sheriff’s office warns of phone scam

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a new scam that is making the rounds.

The newest version of the scam involves a person calling you and asking you for money for unpaid school tuition or back taxes. The caller uses the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office phone number (719-390-5555) and threatens that an arrest warrant will be issued if the money isn’t paid.

The sheriff’s office says this is another example of a spoofing scam, in which the caller uses an app that allows the scammer to appear to be calling from a legitimate number.

If anyone claiming to be from the sheriff’s office calls you and asks for money, you’re encouraged to hang up and call law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office says it never calls and asks for money for any reason.
