Rocky Ford cantaloupes thriving in high temps

While we’re all trying to beat the heat, the cantaloupes near Rocky Ford are thriving because of the warm temperatures.

This crop has had its fair share of a rough season. It has lasted through storms, hail and a freeze since being planted in April.

Now, the heat is helping the cantaloupes grow from about a golf ball size to now baseball size melons in a matter of days.

Cantaloupe farmers said not only does the heat help the famous melons grow in size but also in flavor.

“The hotter the days, the cooler the nights, it actually puts more sugar in the fruit and that’s what creates the good, sweet Rocky Ford cantaloupes that everyone around here is accustomed to and loves around this area,” said Michael Hirakata.

Cantaloupes are set to be harvested and on store shelves by July 21.
