Police injure sex assault suspect during Edgewater shootout

A sex assault suspect was hospitalized after he was shot in the face during a confrontation with police in the Denver suburb of Edgewater.

Edgewater Police Chief John Mackey tells KMGH-TV that detectives from Golden were monitoring a man wanted in a sexual assault case out of Jefferson County. They stopped the man after the alleged victim told officers he knew where she was and was headed toward her Tuesday.

The detectives say the suspect, whose name has not been released, shot at them when he was confronted, so they returned fire. Two officers were injured by glass debris during the shootout.

The suspect was conscious as he was taken to a nearby hospital.

No other information was released.
